Gene Autry Collection, Sidekick Pat Buttram, Vol. 2

Gene Autry Collection, Sidekick Pat Buttram, Vol. 2 Review

This special collection includes: Valley of Fire, Mule Train, Beyond The Purple Hills and Indian Territory

Valley of Fire:Gene Autry is the newly elected mayor of a lawless California boomtown in 1850. His first official acts are to rid the town of its gambling king and to import a caravan of beautiful gals to help settle the wild and wooly townsmen. With the help of his marshal, Gene must then out-gun the nefarious renegades who want to kidnap the brides-to-be for a rival mining camp and take over the town. Featuring Gail Davis as one of the lovely ladies, Pat Buttram as Gene's trustworthy deputy, and Champion, World's Wonder Horse. Includes original theatrical trailer.

Mule Train:Marshal Gene Autry cracks the whip on Western killers as he rides Champion to the stirring rhythm of the great song sensation Mule Train! Pat Buttram provides the comic relief as a prospector who discovers natural cement and is soon entangled with a menacing lady sheriff and a dam-building project. It's that Mule Train rhythm! It's that Autry action . . . roarin' along together in a great Western drama!

Beyond The Purple Hills:Gene Autry takes over as a two-gun sheriff with Champion as his smartest deputy after bank robbers kill the former sheriff. When Judge Beaumont is murdered, circumstantial evidence points to the judge's wild son as the killer. Gene believes the young man is innocent and helps him battle a lynch mob and apprehend the real killers. Pat Buttram and Little Champ are along for the ride in Gene's hottest action picture!

Indian Territory:Gene Autry discards his conventional cowboy garb and white Stetson for the blue uniform of a sergeant in the post-Civil War Cavalry in this 1950 film. The Apaches have been incited to raid the ranchers and homesteaders on the Western frontier by the Apache Kid and Curt Raidler, a renegade Austrian, who wishes to use the Indians to build himself an empire in America. Gene is assigned to end the rioting and, at the same time, smash the group of gun-runners responsible. Gail Davis and Pat Buttram join in the gun-scorching Autry action.

Spike: A Montana Horseman

Spike: A Montana Horseman Review

Spike: A Montana Horseman is the true story of one of the last great American cowboys and poets. The film won 1st prize at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. Spike lived in the Montana Mountains... the Crazies, they called them. His dad had traded with the Indians and built one of the great horse ranches in the United States. The Van Cleve Ranch was 21,000 acres grand. Spike had cowboy values- you work hard for a days pay -- you treat your animals right -- you are decent (but not overly friendly) to your neighbors -- you spend most of your days working your ranch. Summer and winter. Spike was lucky to have the parents that he had and lucky to grow up as a horsemen. Spike once told me that he had more metal in his body from broken bones then anyone he knew and that he couldn't go through the metal detectors in airports without setting off the alarms.

PARIS: SEPTEMBER, 1792

A surging, seething, murmuring crowd of beings that are human only in name, for to the eye and ear they seem naught but savage creatures, animated by vile passions and by the lust of vengeance and of hate. The hour, some little time before sunset, and the place, the West Barricade, at the very spot where, a decade later, a proud tyrant raised an undying monument to the nation's glory and his own vanity.

Super Bowl XXVIII - Dallas Cowboys Championship Video [VHS]

Super Bowl XXVIII - Dallas Cowboys Championship Video [VHS] Review

"How 'bout them Cowboys!" is the exhilarating victory cry roared by hair-sprayed coach Jimmy Johnson after back-to-back Super Bowl championships for his Dallas Cowboys in 1993 and 1994. This overused cheer became almost as obnoxious as Dallas' claim as "America's Team." Fortunately NFL Films' Cowboys: Super Bowl XXVIII Champions doesn't use the refrain until almost the 40-minute mark of this 45-minute highlight film of the 1993-94 season, which lead to 12 wins and 4 losses for Dallas, culminating in a 30-13 victory over Buffalo in the championship game.

Breaking away from the format of letting the key players explain important moments in the season in their own words, the video spares us the gloating of Johnson and egotistic Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Yes, there are plenty of sideline shots of both, but given the circumstances there could have been more. Plenty of game action is offered, but it's left mainly to the interpretation of NFL Films' writers and narrator Harry Kalas. And there is plenty to comment about, from halfback Emmitt Smith's holdout that led to two opening-season losses to the midseason injuries of quarterback Troy Aikman and Smith that led to the other two defeats. It would have been nice to hear Smith explain how he overcame the pain of a partially separated shoulder to play the final regular-season game and the playoffs. Regardless, this film is a must for pro football fans, particularly Dallas fans. After all, "How 'bout them Cowboys!"--Gordie Sholtys

Calamity Jane

Calamity Jane Review

Calamity Jane Feature

  • Deadwood, Dakota Territory, is largely the abode of men, where Indian scout Calamity Jane is as hard-riding, boastful, and handy with a gun as any; quite an overpowering personality. But the army lieutenant she favors doesn't really appreciate her finer qualities. One of Jane's boasts brings her to Chicago to recruit an actress for the Golden Garter stage. Arrived, the lady in question appears (at
This 1953 musical is very much a vehicle for Doris Day, in the title role, as a wild cowgal who can outshoot and outsing any boy on the range. When an actress arrives in Deadwood and uses her feminine charms on Jane's secret love, Wild Bill Hickock (Howard Keel), Jane tries to mend her tomboy ways. Not exactly up to the feminist code of honor, this is still energetic and Day is very perky. Of course, one could almost detect a homosexual undercurrent with the cross-dressing Jane, but this was Hollywood in the 1950s, so we best not. This won an Oscar for Best Song--"Secret Love," by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster. --Rochelle O'Gorman CALAMITY JANE - DVD Movie

When Cowboys Were King (Time Machine)

When Cowboys Were King (Time Machine) Review

There was a time when a trip to the movies was an event, when the double feature was a staple of every kid's Saturday, when popcorn cost a nickel and the flickering lights of the movie palaces conjured up celluloid dreams. WHEN COWBOYS WERE KING saddles up for a nostalgic ride through movie history, reliving and reveling in the glory days of the Western. With the help of cinema buffs, famous critics and a parade of stars, we'll follow the once-dominant genre from the days of the Thomas Edison Studios to Tom Mix, Hoot Gibson, Gene Autry and the Singing Cowboys. NFL: America's Game: 1992 Dallas Cowboys Review

UPC: 85391109471

In 1992; many pundits felt that the Dallas Cowboys were too young to contend for a Super Bowl title. But head coach Jimmy Johnson and team knew otherwise. The Cowboys set out to prove they were already a force to be reckoned with. And so they did. Dallas shined thanks in part to its Triplets" on offense: quarterback Troy Aikman; receiver Michael Irvin; and the NFL's leading rusher; Emmitt Smith. The defense was just as impressive. Linebacker Ken Norton Jr. and pass rusher Charles Haley inspired a stingy unit to become a championship-caliber one by the playoffs. The Cowboys then peaked at the right time; beating the 49ers in an epic NFC Championship Game in San Francisco; and dominating the Buffalo Bills inSuper Bowl XXVII. Join NFL Films as they retell the story of how the '92 Cowboys returned to greatness. America's Game includes exclusive interviews with Aikman; Irvin and Norton Jr.; as they recount the birth of a dynasty."

Alcatraz: The Wild Stallion Review

This is NOT a movie. This is a DVD book. You read it on your TV, PC or personal DVD player.

The west wind came over the Eagles, gathered purity from the evergreen slopes of the mountains, blew across the foothills and league wide fields, and came at length to the stallion with a touch of coolness and enchanting scents of far-off things. Just as his head went up, just as the breeze lifted mane and tail, Marianne Jordan halted her pony and drew in her breath with pleasure. For she had caught from the chestnut in the corral one flash of perfection and those far-seeing eyes called to mind the Arab belief.
