All My Friends Are Cowboys [VHS]

All My Friends Are Cowboys [VHS] Review

“All My Friends Are Cowboys,” produced by Crabbapple Music Corporation, has aired on PBS as a fundraising special.

“Cowboys” stars Wilford Brimley, Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Joe Diffie, Don Edwards, Ty England, Waddie Mitchell and Kristen Zang, with the late Roy Rogers and many other celebrities.

The story and characters are portrayed primarily through the cast’s remarkable performance of 13 original, richly acoustic, cowboy songs. Composed by writer/producer Kelly Crabb, a Los Angeles entertainment attorney who prefers to identify with his Butch Cassidy-shared Utah roots, the captivating music poignantly depicts the story’s complex, humorous and usually conflicting emotions, while reflecting the simplicity of the musical roots it honors.

The story revolves around the evening campfire banter of three working cowboys: Charlie, the chuck wagon philosopher (Wilford Brimley); Mike, an injury-finished bronc rider (Joe Diffie); and Bill, a young moonstruck cowboy (Ty England) struggling with the love of Jenny, a rich man’s daughter (Kristen Zang), and a tenuous link between the rancher’s life of his dad (Don Edwards) and mainstream society.

The story is enhanced by the wisdom, humor and art of cowboy lore through the ages, guided by a friendly, but enigmatic, cowboy Host/Narrator (Waddie Mitchell). Along the way, we meet legends, Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, and the late Roy Rogers.

Montage imagery, the music, poetry and other elements bring the stories to life, vividly portraying the cowboy’s reality; the vast, harsh yet seductive western panorama; sun, dust, wind, rain, quiet and solitude punctuated with moments of foreboding; the rodeo cowboy; Hollywood’s cowboy; Nashville’s cowboy; history’s cowboy.

Magnificent locations, dramatic and musical performances by artists of three generations, visits with heroes, legend and lore give universal and enduring appeal to this celebration of America’s most cherished cultural icon.

Urban Cowboy [VHS]

Urban Cowboy [VHS] Review

John Travolta traded in disco duds for a cowboy hat in this corny love story about a working man who breaks up with his girlfriend (Debra Winger), then plays out their relationship's turmoil inside a huge honky-tonk called Gilley's. The story essentially parallels Travolta's prior hit film, Saturday Night Fever, in its blend of ordinary life, incomplete relationships, and personal pride channeled into niche stardom at a neighborhood club. But for all its regional flavor, Urban Cowboy never enjoys the immediacy and urgency of Fever, and after awhile you can't help but feel bemused by the macho silliness of ongoing "mechanical bull" competitions (basically a faux rodeo device only brave men can master at great chiropractic risk). The Travolta-Winger relationship is pure soap, as well. But this film really is a kind of time-capsule piece on a lot of levels--notably Travolta's career and late '70s Western kitsch--and while it's silly, it's certainly not disagreeable. --Tom Keogh

Hoot Gibson Busts White Collar Criminals in Local Badman DVD (1932) Also Starring Sally Blane, Hooper Atchley, and Edward Hearn. Feature

  • Run Time: 1:02:07
  • Year: 1932
  • Director: Otto Brower
  • Cast: Hoot Gibson, Sally Blane, Hooper Atchley, Edward Hearn
Local Badman is a fast paced and clever western, which is the calling card of a good Hoot Gibson cowboy adventure. Some unscrupulous bankers are running out of money, so they decide to rob themselves! Boarding large sums on a train, the white collar criminals pull off the theft and blame the train driver, doubling their principal amount by insurance fraud. Hoot Gibson, ever a cowboy who would use his brains before his fists, sets to work on figuring out the scheme. Local Badman would be enjoyable enough just because of classic Hoot Gibson as the lead, but the well crafted plot also works to perfection.
